Frequently Asked Questions

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged blood vessels that appear immediately below the surface of the skin, usually in the legs. While many people think that varicose veins are merely a cosmetic problem, they can be painful and uncomfortable for some people. If left untreated, varicose veins will worsen over time.

What Are the Symptoms of Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are often visible to the eye as a blue or purple snake-like bulge on the legs. Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Heavy and aching sensation in the legs, especially after standing/sitting for long periods
  • Swollen ankles and feet
  • Leg cramps
  • Dry and itchy skin over the leg veins
  • Throbbing or burning feeling in the legs

Who Is Affected By Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins can affect both men and women at any age, but they are most common in women who are pregnant or older. The following factors also increase the odds of developing varicose veins:

  • A family history of varicose veins or spider veins.
  • Being overweight or obese.
  • Staying in a sitting or standing position for long stretches of time.
  • The presence of other medical conditions, like blood clots in the veins, abnormal blood vessels, or pelvic tumors.

What Varicose Vein Treatments Are Available at Mark Medical Care?

Our medical team specializes in procedures that are minimally invasive and don’t involve a prolonged or complicated recovery.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is the most widely used varicose vein treatment among adults. Also known as “injection treatment”, sclerotherapy involves injecting a saline solution (a sclerosant) into the varicose veins in order to damage the lining of those veins and block the blood flow. This leads to the blood being redirected to healthier veins. Eventually, the body will flush out the damaged and unused veins naturally.

Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) or Endovenous Ablation (EVLA)

EVLT is an advanced method for treating varicose veins without surgery. Laser energy is the primary tool used for removing the varicose veins in this procedure. The heat from the laser energy damages the lining of the vein walls, causing them to swell and close the vein. Over time, the damaged veins will be absorbed by the body as dead tissues, thus causing the varicose veins to completely disappear.

Microphlebectomy

Microphlebectomy refers to the removal of large varicose veins through a series of very tiny incisions around the problematic veins. It is also a minimally-invasive procedure, so there is no need for general anesthesia or sutures and you can resume your normal activities right away.
