Varicose Veins are a medical condition that can be covered by most NY State Medical Insurance. At Mark Medical Care we are experts in taking care of your Veins.

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure that can treat varicose veins and spider veins. It’s particularly effective in treating small varicose veins that are located close to your skin’s surface. It can be used to treat varicose and spider veins in various parts of your body like thighs, calves, ankles, feet, arms, and buttocks.

At Mark Medical Care, we are committed to providing the safest and most effective treatments for varicose and spider veins. Our team is led by Dr. Ron Mark – a board-certified physician who is commonly referred to as ‘The Vein Doctor’ in the community for his exemplary achievements in the field of varicose vein treatment. We can treat unsightly and painful veins, restore your skin’s natural appearance, and help you look and feel your best.

How Does Sclerotherapy Treatment Work?

The procedure involves injecting a sterile saline solution containing sclerosing agents directly into the affected area using an extremely thin and fine needle. The choice of sclerosing agents, as well as their concentration, is determined based on the size of the affected veins and where they are located.

Once injected, the sclerosing agents in the solution irritate the lining of the affected veins, cause them to expand in size, and stick together. As a result, the blood flow to the affected veins is blocked and redirected to other, healthier veins. After a period of time, the affected veins turn into scar tissue and fade away.

Sclerotherapy for varicose veins is an outpatient procedure and does not require general anesthesia or IV sedation. The procedure can take anywhere from 45 minutes to one hour. Depending on the size of the veins, where they are located, and your overall health condition, multiple treatments of sclerotherapy might be needed in order to achieve the desired results.

How Should You Prepare for Sclerotherapy?

  • During your initial consultation, you should disclose all the relevant details – the health problems you have, the medications you are on, whether you are allergic to any medications, and whether you have been treated for varicose or spider veins before.
  • You have to stop taking anti-inflammatory medications, blood thinners, and certain antibiotics (which your doctor can specify) for a period of 7 to 10 days prior to the treatment.
  • You should not apply any lotion or oil on the affected veins prior to the treatment. Don’t make a simple mistake like this.

What Happens After the Treatment?

After the treatment of larger veins as well as smaller spider veins, you can get back to your normal, day-to-day activities, including walking, right away. You need to wear compression wraps usually for three weeks to make sure the treated veins remain compressed.

Apart from this, there are certain guidelines you need to follow after your treatment. These include:

  • Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners.
  • Avoid taking hot showers or hot baths.
  • Avoid sitting in a sauna or whirlpool.
  • Avoid applying hot compresses to the injected area.
  • Avoid exposing the injected area directly to sunlight.

You need to follow the aforementioned guidelines for four to six weeks following each session of treatment. You might be able to see definitive results in 6 to 12 weeks following the treatment. For larger varicose veins, it might take longer.

Sclerotherapy and Blood Clots – What You Need to Know

One of the common misconceptions that many people seem to have about sclerotherapy is that it can lead to the formation of blood clots. Data shows that sclerotherapy – if performed correctly by a qualified medical professional – is an exceptionally safe procedure and the risk of blood clots is extremely rare.

Moreover, many people are not aware of the difference between blood clots and clot-like lumps that might form at the injected area as part of the healing process. Following the procedure, you might notice a small lump (that might look similar to a blood clot) around the treated vein. These are superficial clots that can be broken down and reabsorbed by your body. The process is quite similar to how your body responds to a bruise or injury.

At Mark Medical Care, we know that many of our patients might be concerned about the possibility of blood clots and other such side effects. It is why we explain to them how the procedure works, answer all their questions, and make sure they feel safe and comfortable. We use highly sophisticated equipment to perform the procedure, follow best practices at all times, and go to great lengths to provide the highest level of medical services to each and every one of our patients.

Top Benefits of Sclerotherapy

Highly Effective

Sclerotherapy is highly effective in treating bulging, unsightly veins and can improve your appearance to a great extent. Apart from this, sclerotherapy is also known to improve varicose vein-related symptoms like swelling, pain, burning sensation, and cramps.

Simple and Painless

Sclerotherapy is a simple procedure that can be performed at the doctor’s office. You do not have to go under anesthesia for the procedure, as it is virtually painless. Apart from the sting of the needle and a mild burning sensation, you will not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. It does not require hospitalization and you can get back to your normal routine the same day (except for strenuous physical activities).

Quick and Long-Lasting Results

Small veins tend to respond to sclerotherapy fairly quickly and tend to disappear within three to six weeks after the treatment. Data shows that in 75% to 90% of the cases, varicose veins and spider veins that are treated with sclerotherapy do not re-occur.
