Varicose Veins are a medical condition that can be covered by most NY State Medical Insurance. At Mark Medical Care we are experts in taking care of your Veins.

The Procedure

Sclerotherapy is a non-invasive treatment that consists of injecting a sterile sclerosing solution into the veins that can be seen on the surface of the skin, known as “Spider Veins,” to close them and allow blood to flow through other healthy veins.

What are Spider Veins?

Telangiectasias or Spider Veins are small dilated capillaries that affect up to 60% of women and 40% of men. They are formed on the surface of the skin, especially on the legs, thighs, calves, and around the heels. Spider Veins can appear for several reasons, including inheritance, overweight, sedentary lifestyle (long hours sitting or standing), hormonal imbalances, pregnancy, and age.

How is the procedure performed?

Sclerotherapy is a procedure that can be performed in the comfort of the doctor’s office. The treatment consists of injecting into the vein a sterile sclerosing solution, using a fine, thin needle to close the blocked vein, allowing the blood to circulate through healthy veins instead. The closure is achieved gradually and naturally, and the final results may be seen after twelve (12) weeks.

How long does the procedure take?

Each Sclerotherapy session lasts approximately one (1) hour. The average patient requires between two (2) or three (3) sessions, depending on the number of Spider Veins.

Care after treatment

  • Wear compression stockings for 3 full weeks after each session.
  • Avoid sun exposure for at least 6 weeks after each session and use a sunscreen with at least 50 SPF.

Does my medical insurance cover Sclerotherapy treatment?

The appearance of Spider Veins is a warning sign of the existence of an internal circulation problem that can be even more complex and dangerous.

The medical recommendation before the patients get a sclerotherapy procedure, is that they must first get a sonogram to establish the degree of Venous Insufficiency and know what type of treatment is required. In most cases, sclerotherapy is the aesthetic treatment performed after finishing medical treatment.

Medical treatments for Varicose Veins may be covered by your NY state Health Insurance; however, Sclerotherapy injections have an additional cost that in many cases, is not covered by the insurance.
