About 20% of adults will develop varicose veins at some point in their lives. At this moment, more than 22 million women and 11 million men in the age group of 40 to 80 years are affected by this painful and unsightly condition. Varicose veins are more common in women and those who have to stand for long periods for their occupation, such as teachers, doctors, nurses, retail salespersons, servers, and so on.

Many of the people suffering from varicose veins have large, swollen veins that are easily visible in their legs. While some people never complain and try to learn to live with it, others develop infected ulcers that are made worse by diabetes and poor blood circulation.

Regardless of how severe your varicose veins are, there are spider vein treatments available that can help. At Mark Medical Care, we offer minimally-invasive procedures using the latest vein treatment technology. Our five advanced New York vein offices are equipped to provide specialized treatments for varicose veins under the leadership of Dr. Ron Mark, MD.

Dr. Mark is a board-certified vascular and interventional radiologist with over 17 years of experience performing varicose vein treatments. Using a combination of cosmetic artistry and innovative technology, Dr. Mark and his dedicated team of varicose vein treatment specialists can give you the results you seek: beautiful, smooth legs and healthy veins.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins develop when the valves in the veins stop functioning properly, most often in the legs. This causes blood to build up and the veins become swollen, raised, and appear blue in color. Spider veins are a milder form that aren’t as pronounced. There are several factors that can cause the valves in the veins to fail:

Prolonged Standing or Sitting

If you remain standing or sitting for several hours in a row every day, it causes the blood to gravitate downwards into the veins. When the blood in the legs is not being pumped in an efficient way due to a lack of movement, it accumulates in certain areas and ultimately can lead to varicose veins, vein disease, venous insufficiency, and leg ulcers.

Genetics

Some people are born with weak vein valves and other vein disorders, making them more vulnerable to varicose and spider veins. If you have family history of varicose veins, it will increase your risk of contracting them at some point.

Obesity or Being Overweight

Being obese or severely overweight would cause extra pressure to be put on the veins inside your legs. Due to the pressure from extra weight, varicose veins and spider veins might develop.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy causes an increase in the amount of blood in the body. With more blood being moved through the vascular system, there can be a reduction in blood flow in the legs. Additionally, the weight of carrying an extra person in the womb puts more pressure on a pregnant woman’s legs, contributing to varicose veins.

Aging

As you get older, your veins slowly lose their elasticity year by year, which causes them to stretch. Taking this into account, the valves inside your body are simultaneously becoming weaker, causing the blood that should be moving towards the heart to flow back and puddle. When too much blood pools in one area, it forces the vein to swell up and enlarge, which causes varicose vein disease symptoms.

Accurate and Timely Diagnosis of Your Vein Condition

If you suspect you have a case of varicose veins, we have the latest tests at Mark Medical Care to evaluate your vein condition. Our New York vein treatment center doctors use physical exams, diagnostic tests (like a duplex ultrasound), and other procedures to diagnose varicose veins.

During the physical exam, one of our board-certified vein doctors will inspect your feet and legs (and other possibly affected areas) to look for varicose veins. You will have to stand so that pressure can be applied to the legs and feet, making the affected veins more visible. Following the exam and testing, our care team will create a customized vein treatment plan for you.

If the problem in question appears more serious, we may perform a duplex doppler ultrasound as a precaution. The ultrasound is pain-free and safe; it involves creating images of the inside of your body using sound waves.
