Varicose Veins Treatments

Varicose veins are twisted and swollen veins visible underneath the skin, usually in the legs. People suffering from this condition often experience persistent discomfort to severe pain, and might also feel self-conscious about the unsightly vein appearance. These veins can cause itching, swelling, pain, and a heavy feeling in the legs. Some people who have this condition are also at risk of developing deep vein thrombosis – the formation of blood clots in the legs.

Treatments

Vascular specialists at Mark Medical Care clinics in New York offer minimally-invasive varicose vein treatment to remove damaged veins and improve blood flow in a safe and comfortable in-office environment. Our skilled vein experts will recommend the appropriate treatment plan according to your specific varicose vein symptoms.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

EVLT is a highly effective, non-surgical varicose veins medical procedure that utilizes laser technology. It involves administering a local anesthesia to the leg and then inserting a thin tube laser into the saphenous vein. The idea is to apply heat to the affected area via the laser fiber, which expands the vein walls and closes the enlarged vein. Eventually, it will turn into scar tissue and fade away. The blood is then redirected to healthier veins and circulation is improved.

The procedure itself is quick and painless; it takes about an hour to perform and patients often see an immediate improvement in symptoms. Patients who undergo EVLT are able to resume their normal daily routine the very next day and can usually perform more strenuous physical activities in two weeks. They are required to wear compression stockings for about a week.

While EVLT is an excellent option for patients with both new varicose veins and existing varicose veins, it’s still recommended to discuss your specific condition with a specialist.

Microphlebectomy Treatment

Microphlebectomy is performed by making tiny incisions around the malfunctioning veins and extracting the veins from the surface of the area under treatment. Since the incisions are so small, they don’t require sutures and the patient doesn’t need to be put under general anesthesia. Our vein doctors routinely perform this procedure right in the office with minimal downtime.

For patients who have large varicose veins that can’t be effectively treated with sclerotherapy, microphlebectomy is usually the recommended treatment. In a sclerotherapy procedure to treat smaller varicose veins, the surgeon injects a liquid chemical into the vein to seal it shut, which causes that vein to fade over time.

Large surface veins are removed with microphlebectomy. The procedure is not only less invasive, but also results in less pain, quicker healing, and a better cosmetic outcome. The procedure can be performed in 30–60 minutes. Any scarring is slight and becomes barely noticeable after a few months.

Microfoam Treatment

Endovenous microfoam therapy involves injecting an FDA-approved chemical into the varicose vein to cause it to collapse. As a result, blood gets redirected to the surrounding healthy veins. The procedure takes less than 60 minutes to complete, and you can walk out of the clinic the same day. While you can resume your day-to-day activities right away, you may be recommended to avoid exercise for 1–2 weeks.

Sclerotherapy Treatment

During sclerotherapy varicose vein treatment, a solution is injected into the vein using a very fine needle. This causes the lining of the vein to swell up, so the blood vessels are sealed off and blood flow is prevented. The body slowly absorbs the vein and blood starts flowing to the healthier veins.

Surgical incisions are not required and most patients feel little to no pain. Each affected vein may require multiple injections, but they all will disappear within 1–2 months. The treatment works well when you want varicose veins treated without having to have intense varicose vein surgery.

Sclerotherapy is more effective on smaller varicose veins that have healthier vessels. If you have cosmetic vein problems that show minimal symptoms, like spider veins, sclerotherapy might be a salient option for you. Patients are able to go home immediately afterward.

Varicose Ulcer Treatment

Also known as a venous stasis ulcer or venous ulcer, a varicose ulcer is a leg wound that forms when the leg veins stop circulating blood toward the heart. Blood can accumulate in the veins, building up pressure on the skin which can lead to an open sore. If treatment is delayed, these sores can become larger and make varicose veins worse with time.

The treatment of varicose ulcers is a two-pronged approach: it involves controlling the pressure in the leg veins and then treating the ulcer. To control the pressure, the patient is directed to elevate the leg and wear compression stockings or bandages.

Once the pressure is relieved, a vascular surgeon removes the dead tissue around the sores and applies a special dressing to accelerate healing. If the sores don’t heal, surgical solutions like sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, and endovenous ablation are usually recommended.
