Did you know that nearly one out of four American adults suffers from varicose veins? Data shows that around 20 to 25% of adults are at the risk of developing varicose veins at some point in their lives. Women are more vulnerable to varicose veins compared to men and are at higher risk of developing venous ulcers and other related conditions.

Varicose veins and spider veins can be unsightly and make you feel self-conscious about the way you look. More importantly, they can also cause pain and serious discomfort and in some cases lead to complications like blood clots and inflammation of the veins.

At Mark Medical Care, we know that varicose veins are more than just a cosmetic problem. We have a team of board-certified physicians who have years of experience in varicose vein treatment and are committed to providing the highest level of treatment and care to those suffering from vein diseases.

What are Varicose Veins and How Do They Occur?

Varicose veins also referred to as varicosities, are enlarged and twisted veins that are overfilled with blood. They tend to be red, blue, or purple in color and appear swollen and lumpy. Varicose veins are caused primarily as a result of increased blood pressure in your veins. When there is an increase in blood pressure, the walls of your veins tend to weaken, which in turn causes your veins to stretch and become enlarged.

It makes it harder for the one-way valves in your veins – which are meant to ensure blood flow in only one direction (from your legs to your heart) – to work properly. As a result, blood pools in your veins – usually in superficial veins that are located right under your skin’s surface – which causes your veins to become swollen and knotty in appearance.

While leg veins have the highest risk of developing varicosities, varicose veins can form anywhere on the body – including the face, arms, pelvis, genitals, and buttocks.

What are the Risk Factors for Varicose Veins?

The most common risk factors for varicose veins include:

  • Sitting in a chair or standing in the same position for long periods of time
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Having a family history of varicose veins
  • Wearing clothes and accessories that are too tight
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause

How are Varicose Veins Diagnosed?

Varicose veins can be diagnosed through a physical exam and a duplex or Doppler ultrasound test.

How are Varicose Veins Treated?

At Mark Medical Care, we offer advanced and proven medical procedures to treat varicose veins, which includes:

We will choose the right varicose veins treatment for you and create a personalized treatment plan depending on a number of factors including:

  • Your age
  • Gender
  • Medical history
  • Whether you have small or large varicose veins
  • The symptoms you exhibit
  • Whether you are allergic to certain medications, diagnostic tests, or treatments
  • Whether you have any underlying health problems
  • Your overall health condition
  • Your preferences

For instance, if you have small varicose veins, sclerotherapy (which involves injecting a solution of sclerosing agents directly into the affected vein) could be the right treatment for you. For larger varicose veins, endovenous laser ablation (which involves the use of laser energy to close the affected vein) might be the right treatment for you.

Why Choose Mark Medical Care for Varicose Veins Treatment?

Our physicians are board-certified, which is the highest standard for expertise of a specialty in the field of medicine. In order to become board certified, physicians need to be experts in their chosen field and meet higher standards compared to other physicians. How to Prevent Varicose Veins?

  • Regular physical activity – particularly low-impact exercises like walking – can improve blood circulation and reduce the risk of varicose veins and prevent existing veins from becoming worse.
  • Excess weight can put a lot of pressure on your veins – particularly the veins in your legs – and increase the risk of varicose veins. It’s why you should eat a well-balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Avoid sitting or standing in the same position for long periods of time. You can keep your legs in an elevated position while sitting to relieve the pressure on your veins. If your job requires standing for long periods of time, you can stretch and flex your legs and take a few steps every now and then to boost your circulation.
  • Wear compression stockings to reduce the pressure on your veins.
